If you ask Hotch how many siblings he has, he'll usually take a moment before answering.
Because Sean is his kid brother, but honestly? So is Spencer. And then there's JJ, the kid sister he never had. Closer to his age (but not that close, as they enjoy reminding him), there's Penelope and Emily, sisters to each other and to him. And Derek, who's always been more brother than friend. Once upon a time there was Elle, and years later Kate and an older sister in Alex. And first Jason and then Dave were family in a way that was much harder to define.
So while the answer he’ll eventually give to the sibling question is almost always one, that never feels quite right somehow? Because Hotch's family is so much bigger than that.
And he wouldn’t have it any other way.
#aaron hotchner#fbi family#criminal minds#personal stuff#don't mind me i'm just feeling emotional about hotch as the team's big brother#when you look at his relationships with the team (especially jj and morgan)#he's totally the serious older brother of the family#he's only really a parental figure to them because the actual team dad (gideon)#was flaky and then absent entirely so hotch had to step up and fill his role#just like you'd expect of an eldest sibling#(rossi is the cool uncle who also fills the parental role when it's needed of him)#man i have. so many emotions about this family and their dynamics#found family

What If
About five days after the end of the case, with Ryan and Theo’s ‘deaths’, Mike was informed, again, about Dad. The first time, Max didn’t even say the words before he assumed the (’correct’) worst news. Hysterical about losing another parent, he had to be sedated and kept so until he was stable enough to receive it again.
The young man fell into a depressed state after everything. While Max and Gwen grew together as a family, surrounding her with the last remaining Hardy members, Mike didn’t have any drive. He languished for four months after the case. Physical therapy went nowhere and he was stuck to a wheelchair for a good portion of it. It was only after Max kicked his ass, verbally, and talks with therapists and people online, that he managed to rise a few degrees.
On the anniversary of, well, Joe’s escape, he placed flowers on their graves while using the cane that Aunt Jenny got him. Limited mobility thanks to his back. Physical therapy was helping, now that he was listening to it. Sitting at a desk in the BAU, he still had a couple of shots at active duty. There were a few that wanted him hidden, scrapped. People that thought he should be sent to Quantico to teach. The ultimate lesson to students. Don’t get too involved.
Unknown to everyone, the reason that he had been getting better was because of three cases that came in. It was concluded that they had nothing in common. He also hadn’t been allowed to touch them. Officially. Unofficially, after another three came, he started looking at them with everyone’s backs turned. There were two perps, using the same tactics but different in small ways.
And he thinks one is Theo.
There’s a laptop under his bed along with a couple of notebooks worth of information. He can’t have a room, Max would find it and chew him out for acting like Dad. Agent Campbell’s death made him think about some of the things his father was doing before- before that day. There have been sightings of a man close to Theo’s stature and base facial features. He thinks he’s alive, and part of the reason. The problem comes from the other side of things. He doesn’t know who the second person is. That and there are people. Agents, FBI, Marshals, possibly NSA, others that he can tell are former Military and now private operatives. He’s getting attention, and he doesn’t know why.

"Momma?" the little girl stepped into her mothers doorway, clutching her stuffed fox close. "Momma, I- had a nightmare." She stood shivering, as she looked into the dark room."
Debra woke up, still groggy when she heard her daughter at the doorway. Sitting up, she woke herself up enough to sit on the side of her bed. “Come here, Little One. Tell me about it.”

'do you really think you would be able to live with yourself if Max or Gwen got killed?'
Ryan remembered the words. Mike was the one that had been around the first time. He knew how bad he could get. The drinking on the case, the shouting at agents, shooting anything that moved. Beating up Alex, killing him when they didn't get to Deb on time. He not only knew, he could pick the right words to make him feel guilty. That's one of the best things he got from Debra. Works on me when it needs to.
They had Theo's sister. The FBI didn't know. They wouldn't be able to get through to her. Joe kept smirking as he pulled out some of his best tricks. Max was scared, terrified at his actions. She hadn't even seen half of his bad side during the search for the Grays and Joe the second time. Then, he didn't have to be, with all the tech that Franklin and Clarke provided after Beth's death. Strauss was the worse one he worked over. Everything else was by the book, surprisingly. But now, trying to get Mark, Daisy and Theo. He had needed a new target. Theo was perfect, but things were going down fast. If I can hallucinate Joe, why can't I have the same for Debra? I need someone to berate me.
Unidentified number. He answered with Max in the room, hoping to get a trace. Theo was not happy, trying to get information on his sister. Max was getting nowhere in the scan. “Hey, why don't we get together? Just the three of us,” he suggested. Max was glaring at him. It was his self-destructive tendencies. No one else should put their lives on the line while dealing with the psychos.
“You better make that a reservation for four,” he said, ending the call.
Four? Why would he- Mark and Daisy, maybe. Why would they be working with him? He wouldn't want to see Daisy, and likely wouldn't endear himself to Mark. His thoughts broke off as he looked around, noting a missing item. It then connected in his head. Not an accomplice, not help. Two sides. One hostage, one taker. One hostage, one taker. “Where's Mike?” he asked.
“What?” Max said.
“Mike. Where's Mike?”
Instead of calling, she tried tracking his phone and couldn't find a signal to it. She shook her head while staring at him. “He grabbed Mike,” she stated. It's almost as if she didn't need confirmation, but she was hoping for a denial.
“Yeah.” Theo would kill him. Mark would kill him. You said you wouldn't kill him, Joe, but even then I doubted you. Mike, why didn't you include yourself in that? Why did you talk to me like you weren't important to me either? Don't get hurt, Mike. Don't get killed. Please stay alive. I can't lose you.

"Go on without me." for Elle or "I got your back." for Elle (& Morgan maybe?), if you want
Ooh, great choices, thanks! Also, [insert ‘both is good’ gif here]
“Morgan, he’s in the- oof!” Elle’s voice over the radio was cut off by the whooshing sound of someone having their breath knocked out of them, and Morgan immediately broke into a run, angling towards the corner of the warehouse that she had been clearing. He hurdled a stack of pallets, skidded around a corner, and got a brief glimpse of a running figure in the distance before rounding one final corner and finding Elle curled up on the floor in the middle of the next aisle.
He holstered his gun, and crouched down beside her.
“You okay?” he asked. Elle nodded quickly.
“I’m fine, I’m fine,” she wheezed. “He went that way.” She jerked her head in the direction of where Morgan had seen the running figure who was undoubtedly their unsub. Morgan kept a hand hovering by his holster and his head on a swivel, but he didn’t stand up. “Didn’t you hear me?” Elle said, still breathless but her grimace of pain had turned into more of an annoyed frown. “He’s gonna get away- go on without me.”
“Not a chance, Greenaway,” said Morgan, extending a hand and pulling her up into a sitting position. “Hotch has got this place surrounded- scumbag’s not going anywhere, and I’m not leaving you alone when there’s a chance he could circle back. Get your breath back, and then we’ll get him together.”
“I’m a big girl, Morgan, I can look after myself,” Elle said, irritably, retrieving her gun from where it had fallen on the floor in the scuffle. “Plus, I’m armed.” She gave the gun a small wave before holstering it.
“I know,” said Morgan. Elle held out her hand this time, and Morgan pulled her to her feet. Knowing that Elle didn’t much like accepting help, he shot her his most charming smile in an attempt to cheer her up. “But I’ve got a rule about people getting the drop on my friends- if it happens once, it doesn’t happen again.”
“Oh, we’re friends now?” Elle joked. Her tone was still cranky, but she couldn’t quite keep a small smile off her face. Morgan clutched his heart and pantomimed being wounded.
“Ouch. Not if you’re gonna hurt me like that, we’re not,” he said. Elle grinned briefly, shaking her head in amusement and punching Morgan gently in the shoulder.
“Don’t think I won’t beat you up if you use this as an excuse to try and baby me,” she said, as she pulled out her gun and moved so that she was covering Morgan’s back. He unholstered his own weapon, covering her in return.
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” He glanced over his shoulder one last time. “You good?” Elle nodded.
“I’m good.” A pause. “Thanks, Morgan.”
“Anytime. You know I got your back.”
“I know.” She tapped his shoulder and they moved off as one. “And I’ve got yours.”

FBI Family Character Sheet
|| The Basics ||
Name: Michael Emerson Weston Nickname(s): Mike, Mikey, Mini-Ryan Age: 30 Species: Human Story: Michael Weston is the only son of Leo Graves and Elle Weston. If one were to look into those names, everything would be found to be fabricated. 'Elle Weston' was actually Debra Parker, a runaway from a family deep within a cult. She had been 'given' to the leader to be 'become' a woman. Afraid of his actions, afraid of her parents, she had run away and gotten her sister out as well. In college she met Ryan Hardy, barely older than her. Within a couple months of dating, she became pregnant. About five months in, her parents found out about the baby. Worried that they would take the child, especially if it was a girl, they used fake names during delivery. Michael was chosen due to Ryan's connection to law enforcement. Emerson due to Debra's fondness of the poet. The pair going into the FBI doubled the separation, as they worried about someone coming after him due to their work. Their fears were realized when he was kidnapped due to one of Ryan's cases at 14. Ryan cut himself mostly out and Mike stayed with Debra for the remainder of his high school years.
Mike went into the FBI, against both of his parents wishes. He barely missed youngest BAU agent when he managed to make it into the unit, his Security details and Cyberwork helping his cause while his paper on Carroll was what won them over. Troy was his first and only partner. He wasn't in the section very long before Joe Carroll broke out of death row and started killing again. Being the BAU 'expert', he was leading the other agents that only had the basics when his father walked into the room. He was only a little surprised. They had been talking about bringing him in, but he didn't think he would be lecturing in front of his Dad. Flubbing on purpose, it caught his attention and Ryan had to fix his mistakes. He wasn't able to talk candidly in front of him, but managed to get things through that no one else could pick up. The case went predictably. Debra was part in as people were shown to be helping Carroll, showing devotion which placed it in cult territory. The two fought, and Mike got to be at the front of it. His knowledge about Claire almost had him killed, but it was his flub up around Carroll that mortified him. He called to Dad while the man was choking him. Now the man knew that Ryan was his father. He thought it was fascinating. He couldn't do anything with the information, as his plans were derailed shortly after and he 'died'. Not before burying Agent Parker, his mother, and killing her.
The year after that, Mike had a hope that his father would come back into his life. That didn't work, as his father was just as big of a mess as he was before. Even cleaned up, he approached Max, with the guise of helping him find an alive Joe Carroll, over talking to him. He was cold when they were brought back after the subway attack. The world now knew that they were related, so no more hiding. Instead, he was just pissed and annoyed a little bit. Keeping it professional helped him a lot in hiding the real reasons. Finding out about the Joe Carroll hunt room, his sobriety just to hunt the man down. It was no wonder he beat the shit out of Luke Gray. Anger from several sources welled up in him and he was a little afraid of it. Trying to leave, so he could sort out, the death of his Aunt Beth forced him to stay. Breaking down and forcing his father to realize he was deteriorating from the stress and havoc in their lives, Mike was now closer to his father than they had been in years. Close enough that the man was able to talk him down from executing Lily Gray. She, however, had a gun and the three shot her in self-defense, Mike's being the kill shot. With Joe Carroll taking him hostage one last time, Luke being killed by Max, everything settled down for a month. Mark was spotted in Europe. Despite Ryan and Max both trying to keep him back, he goes off to find and finish off the Gray line.
Back for the wedding of Gina and her new wife, Mike got to see what he was missing out on. Max had a boyfriend named Tom, Dad had a girlfriend named Gwen. And Mark was back in New York, after discovering that bodies were being posed similar to that of Lily and Luke's deaths. Now, things were falling apart. Several people managed to get Strauss released, tarnishing their reputation even though they were right. When he ended up killed, they started looking for Theo Noble, the first student of Strauss's. A chameleon, he managed to hide well enough to possibly escape with Penny, his sister. Then, Mark and Daisy told him about the laptop, and Ryan kidnapped Penny. Tom, forced by Mark, abducted Mike and brought him to them. Theo took over and used him as leverage to get his sister back. It worked, Ryan realizing how close he came to losing Mike due to his recklessness. He went to AA, Mike and Max planned on a night to talk about the events in their lives. Mark took the opportunity to stab him several times, then go after Max. He was killed and Mike was rushed to the hospital. Everything was fuzzy after that. Max was hesitant to tell him what happened to Ryan. It wasn't until a day later when he was being interviewed that someone told him Ryan had gone over the railing with Theo. His panic and crying attack led him to be sedated and the doctors warned he couldn't be agitated like that again while he was healing. He couldn't go to the 'funeral'. The FBI had once again suspended him. He fell into a depression that only became worse when he was let out of the hospital. It bled into his unwillingness to go into rehab, and build up to walking again from the stab wounds.
About five months after the end of the cases, he started thinking about his father's death. Neither his or Theo's bodies had been found and it seemed stupid. The river was swift and the current could have destroyed or lost them at some point, but nothing came up them. Then, the thought of Lisa Campbell being killed after Theo's 'death' made him wonder if the man survived and came back to finish her off. With that he started searching. Information, anything he could get his hands on during the last two days while he was in the hospital. He found out about Hopkins and what Dad was searching for. Some mysterious person that Theo was helping, and getting help from. Mike needed to know, he needed to find out. Now, he had all the information he could get on a laptop that could only be manually connected through wire and a box of scraps. He was still drinking, still on suspension while they went through the wreckage of the Carroll-Gray-Strauss cases, but he had a target. Find a possibly alive Theo Noble. And maybe his father, if certain sightings are to be believe.

Any fandom: cute smut
Debra knew the man was trying to be suave, but Ryan ended up not near an egregious spot but a ticklish one and started laughing, then couldn’t stop even when he removed his hands. “Sorry, sorry,” she tried, commanding herself to stop feeling the phantom fingers moving over the area and having it not work. He put on a smile before moving up to kiss her senseless and go back to what he had been working on.
